Ailing jail inmate dies Saturday, May 19, 2007

A Saginaw County Jail inmate who fell critically ill this week died Friday, one week after the death of another jail inmate who suffered from a medical condition.

Norman D. Houck, 51, suffered complications from pneumonia, his wife, Tina, has said. Deputies moved Houck to Covenant HealthCare on Monday.

"This was the wrong time for something to happen to him," Tina Houck, 36, said Friday.

Authorities jailed Houck May 3 on a misdemeanor charge of domestic violence. A police report indicates he grabbed Tina Houck by the neck and threatened to kill her.

Tina Houck said her husband has struggled with his mental health since a near-fatal car wreck in November 2005.

"His clothes, his slippers, his coat, everything is still here," she said from her Carrollton Township home. "The kids come home from school, and he's not going to be here. We're really devastated. I just gotta learn to adapt." ...
